Estimation of hydraulic conductivity from borehole flowmeter tests considering head losses

چکیده
Recent numerical studies have demonstrated that the conventional interpretation of the borehole flowmeter test (BFT) may lead to considerable errors in estimates of the horizontal hydraulic conductivity ðKrÞ due to neglect of head loss across the electromagnetic borehole flowmeter (EBF). Even in uniform aquifers, the conventional interpretation underestimates Kr at the base and overestimates Kr at the top of the aquifer. In this paper, we derive exact analytical solutions for hydraulic head and streamlines induced by the BFT in a confined homogeneous aquifer. The solutions explicitly consider head loss across the EBF. The derived analytical solutions for head distribution in the vicinity of the pumping well and for volumetric flux to the well sections above and below the EBF can be used to interpret field BFT data. In uniform aquifers, this approach can be applied to obtain estimates of Kr from the conventional interpretation. Applications of this approach to the BFT field data set from a highly heterogeneous aquifer indicate that the constraint of aquifer homogeneity limits the applicability of this approach, but it can provide useful insights into the mechanism of flux redistribution near the borehole during the BFT. q 2003 Elsevier B.V. Cross-borehole flowmeter tests for transient heads in heterogeneous aquifers.
Cross-borehole flowmeter tests have been proposed as an efficient method to investigate preferential flowpaths in heterogeneous aquifers, which is a major task in the characterization of fractured aquifers. Cross-borehole flowmeter tests are based on the idea that changing the pumping conditions in a given aquifer will modify the hydraulic head distribution in large-scale flowpaths, producing m...

[1] The accurate characterization of the location, hydraulic properties, and connectivity of major fracture zones is essential to model flow and solute transport in fractured media. Cross-borehole flowmeter tests, which consist of measuring changes in vertical borehole flows when pumping a neighboring borehole, were shown to be an efficient technique to provide information on the properties of ...

The interpretation of falling-head tests in cased boreholes is discussed. These tests are commonly used to measure hydraulic conductivity of compacted clay liners and are often part of the construction quality assurance program. Three methods of interpretation are reviewed with data sets collected from real tests. Two of these methods have been the subject of past research by other authors: the...

A large-scale, natural-gradient tracer test in a heterogeneous aquifer at a site near Columbus, Miss. is simulated using three-dimensional (3D) hydraulic conductivity distributions derived from the borehole flowmeter test data. The simulated plume is more sensitive to the way the hydraulic conductivity field is interpolated from the measured data than it is to the dispersivity value. The transp...
